Kevin has been working to promote EDI and Antiracism for over 30 years. Kevin remains active in EDI, antiracism and decolonization of the curricula initiatives at School and University level, and in three academic societies.
At the University of St Andrews, Kevin have been an active member of the School of Biology’s Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committee (BEDI) since its inception in 2012, was Deputy Director for 7 years, and Director for 2022-23. Kevin played a central role in helping the School to achieve an Athena Swan Gold award in 2021, though changes to staff recruitment, promotion, student admissions, and curriculum reform.
Kevin has given EDI lectures within the university and at other Universities. He is also a member of the University’s Race Equality Charter SAT committee, and curriculum working group, contributing to the national debate on racism in academia, writing articles in Nature, PNAS and RSE’s Resource magazine. As Antiracism Advocate within the School of Biology, Kevin leads on anti-racist initiatives, including decolonizing the biology curriculum. Amongst the actions he has piloted, the most prominent are the establishment of the Biology Antiracism Committee (BARC), and the introduction of a microgrant scheme for minoritized biology students. Kevin has participated in five separate mentorship schemes, acting as mentor to twelve early career researchers.
