There has been extensive research into human evolution, but the history of our species’ origins is largely understood through fossil bones and teeth, supplemented by clever inferences about life history. Yet what marks our species out as extraordinary is not our bodies but our minds, and understanding of the evolutionary roots of human cognition – our intelligence, language, cooperation, and culture – remains a monumental challenge. Research into these topics is critical if we are to comprehend how our species evolved, in which respects humans are unique, and find our place in nature.
